Carol and I go back to junior high school, through high school, and into our lovely ages of 76 year olds plus. We expected to live forever but we used to "wonder what would get us." How short-sighted we were. I spent many a Friday night at Carol's after going to a San Diego High football game and woke up Saturday morning to breakfast served at the family side-board in the dining room. Carol's Dad hired me while I was still in high school to come to his office after school and do the filing for his secretary for 45 cents an hour and I was thrilled. It was at the San Diego Wholesale Credit Union office. Because Carol went off to a University after high school and I stayed here to work, we didn't really re-connect until later when we were both active in the San Diego High Alumni Assn and the San Diego High School Foundation. I say "active" - Carol was really active, I stated my opinions and did what I could, mostly typing. Once a secretary, always a secretary. Carol loved movies and she chose really good ones that we attended afternoons, we went to the Lyceum theatre for musicals, we attended an afternoon Padre game and we lamented the team when they didn't do well, and we went to a couple of cooking classes in PB. Truthfully, Carol was the more level-headed, I, the more emotional of the pair but we were good buddies and enjoyed being together. The word "friend" is precious to me, beyond compare, and the thing that makes us the best we can be. Goodbye dear friend.

We are among Carol's "newer" friends, having moved into the neighborhood about 5 years ago. There are so many things that make me think of Carol. We visited ALL of the Thrift and Second Hand shops and usually bought something which thrilled us to no end.We especially enjoyed swaping sgtories about our kids and grandkids usually over lunch....we made a point of trying every new restaurant and a lot of the old ones too. We liked sharing signature dishes. We loved giving our joint dinner parties. Her desserts were among the tastiest I ever had. I counted on Carol to know what was doing in the neighborhood and beyond. We visited exhibitions and she searched out the latest and greatest movies. What will we ever do without her? Carol, I miss you already! You have made our lives better for having known you. Much love, Linda and Bob White

What adventures we've had!! Starting in grammer school. continuing to high school where we started the Quinquetts - a girls' club extraordinarie - a group that still gathers today. Memories of horseback riding, beaching, movies and of course, boys. Then weddings - Carol honored me by being my maid of honor and shortly after that she married Dick. As childrearing and working took over our days, we still managed to sneak in special times together. After the kids had grown, we reconnected with travel to Mazatlan and working at the San Diego High School Alumni Association. I've been blessed the last few years to regularly meet for adventures in museums, art, and dining. I particulary appreciate her insight. Thanks for reminding me that my mother, though talented, was a nut. You have made my life more full and joyous in so many ways. Mexico over the years, day tours, and most of all helping me participate in ways that I would not have otherwise. In alliance and love to Carol and family,, Vivian Heid and family

There is this subtle impact she has on the lives of all she touched. When I think of Carol I think of her subtle smile in her eyes when she looked at you. She really gets you. She knows you. She sees the real you. She looks you in the eyes and there is a laughter in her silence. A laughter of friendship and recognition that says, "Hey I love you." Her travels have been filled with grace, poise, and passion. Why should this journey be any less adventurous. I am so glad that she gave the ones she loves time to share in a blessed bon voyage.

We have spent over two decades together in sunny (at times very wet) Mazatlan. We have numerous memories to hold dear in our hearts. Lindamar #7 is where the Bond's hung their hat. Carol and Dick tried several places; #11 right above and them #8 across the hall. Carol made sure to include everyone in Thanksgiving, patio gatherings, tours in the country, or ventures downtown. I guess one could say the party really began when they arrived. You will always have a very warm place in my heart.

I have known Carol as a 28th Street neighbor for about 10 years and my Grandmother before me I am sure since the Smiths moved in. Carol has been a wonderful neighbor and great friend. She helped me when I first got my dog and checked on him while I was at work and he was a puppy. Got my mail and checked on the house when I was out of town. I would watch her home for her and Dick while they were off to Mexico and to be with their dear friends. (She just loved those trips) Carol is a real lady, and a beautiful woman. She always looked so perfect and in great shape. We shared our love for our beautiful 28th Street and for San Diego. Having Carol get sick and all this happing so fast is just overwhelming and inconceivable! . This situation is tragic! I will always remember some wonderful lunches we shared with Rosemary (another neighbor) at some of her favorite places along Adams Ave. Carol my love and blessings are with you today, tomorrow and forever! Love Jeanne, John and Mike

15 years ago, Carol changed our life with a simple "Hello". It was our first time at the Lindemar, and Carol made us feel welcome and safe to explore Mexico. She made Mexico fun and exciting, taking us to different litte towns, finding interesting places to eat and shop. We took many local trips in the Mazatlan area in the Mazmobile ! Since then we have gone to Mazatlan twice a year.....every year, it won't be the same without her. We have also traveled with Carol and Dick to....Ensenada, Meridia CanCun, Veracruz, Oaxaca and many more. She was a fantastic tour guide and our official fishing derby judge. The memories we share with Carol and Dick will remain in our hearts forever. You may be out of sight, but never out of our hearts.

Of upmost importance to Carol is to nurture a love of learning as an educational imperative. Our biological clan were the primary beneficiaries of her philosophy, however Carol's vision went beyond her family. She was a devoted volunteer for the past 15-20 years at Young Audiences of San Diego http://www.yasandiego.org/about/about.html, a great organization which brings arts to the schools, A number of the entertainers who enlisted with YA had been regulars at the Smith house in the late 70s/early 80s. In fact, we had a couple of really great jam sessions at the house when I brought home my tribe of bohemian gypsy style artist friends. Of course, we fed them as well... Her other community passion was assisting in the future of superior education through her work with both the San Diego High School Foundation and the Alumuni Association. Several of her '49er classmates are also active in these organizations. http://www.sandiegohighschool.org/foundation.htm If you are so inclined, either place would be a wonderful choice to offer a donation in her name. She enthusiastically offered her gifts freely to them and the community is a much better place for it.

We all enjoyed our feasts together and each Christmas Eve, we did our best to out-do the last year with simply elegant, delicious dinners. Neighbors and friends joined us over the years to partake of the festivities which often included a rousing evening of charades. As experimental as we got for the holdiays, the bottom line home cooked comfort food was Carol's lasagna. It was the yummy signal we were home and all was good with the world. Here is her famous (at least in our family) recipe for you to enjoy: CHEESE LASAGNA 8-10 Lasagna Noodles 12 oz grated Mozzarella Cheese--1 1/2 C 15 oz Ricotta Cheese--1 small carton 3 Eggs 1 box Frozen Chopped Spinach 9 oz defrosted and squeezed dry 2 T Butter 1/2 C grated Parmesan Cheese 1/2 t Salt 1/4 t Pepper 2 8oz Cans Tomato Sauce Cook and drain noodles. Combine all ingredients except Tomato Sauce and 1/4 c Parmesan. Pour 1 can of Tomato on bottom of buttered 9x13 casserole. Layer half of the noodles and top with mixture. Cover with another layer of noodles topped with the other can of Tomato Sauce and sprinkled with the rest of the Parmesan Cheese. Bake for 20 minutes at 375 until bubbling. Let rest before cutting.

Carol began painting in watercolors about five years ago at the encouragement of her friend, artist Sanford Wolcott. He got her started with lessons and after just two sessions, she had her own studio set up and was painting and printing her own holiday cards. We began replacing the other art in the house with her beautiful framed originals and treasure these pieces. Take a look at the Paintings photo album to see them all...
