David and Jean have inspired Australian microscopists for generations. The scientific integrity and exacting nature David exhibited has kept Australia at the forefront of microscopy research and application. To me David has been a mentor and friend over three decades, providing astute and honest professional and personal advice as needed. David was a rare character combining a brilliant scientific mind with a generosity of time for students and societies alike. Jean and family our thoughts are with you in this difficult time.
