I had the pleasure of getting my staff to videotape Sean Constello's debut at the King Biscuit Blue Festival in Helena Arkansas in I think 1997 or so. Ut was he told me the night he would have been at his senior prom but he was at home with the blues. He was polished and imressive and I followed his career as it progressed. It was sad to hear of his demise as a young man. He will be missed.

...and I only discovered your music today! And then very soon read that you had passed over a year ago. You are amazing. I don't even know you and I feel like I just heard that a family member was lost, and it makes me want to cry. My heart goes out to your family as their feelings of loss are most profound, but also to all your fans and the fans to come. You will live on through your music and I hope we will meet one day.

It's November, and I just now learned of Sean's death on the 15th of April. It's stunning, shocking, unsettling, and hugely disappointing. Several years ago, in Savannah GA's City Market, my wife and I and two friends were strolling after dinner and poked our head into a small downstairs club in a courtyard. Sean was leading a group of older players (including an organ, ohhh that organ with Sean's guitar ... just wow.. It was just an absolutely outrageous and delicious "find" for us. One of my favorite serendipity nights ever. We had stumbled onto a treasure. Saw him again years later in Savannah at the Roundhouse Blues and Barbeque Festival, and also made a trip to Hilton Head to catch him in a club there. Kept an eye on his global itinerary, just in case I might be able to hear him again, whenever. Then came the announcement of March 26 , Savannah Music Festival with Eric Culbertson, and I scheduled a needed trip to Savannah, from Wisconsin, especially to see that show. A couple of weeks later, my wife suffered a terrible accident and my life changed --- kind of oblivious to the outside world for months as she recovered. No doubt that's why I just now learned that basically 3 weeks after his SMF show that I was lucky to see before our own family trauma happened --- he left us. "Going home to be with God", as he sang on his recent CD release. Of course, I didn't really "discover" Sean --- others had already. But I will not forget that night in Savannah when I first was drawn into his fandom, early in his career. One of those with us that night was a New Yorker, Manhattan type, working in TV. She was incredulous that she had come to the quiet, slower, out-of-the-way Savannah on a weeknight and found a talent like his with a few dozen people listening. I never wanted to own a collection of CDs of "all of Sean Costello"; I just wanted to start building it and have my children and grandchildren get the rest of his things after I die (I am 66 now). To now realize that his music is complete, that I have all of his recordings ever made --- is just too very sad. My family has fought with the mind's demons over generations. It is so very tough to understand, and when anyone that you know succumbs, accidentally or not, coping is terribly hard. May the ache eventually subside and give way to the realization that this fine man in his 29 years touched SO many in so many ways, bringing joy and amazement. That's something that few of us are able to do no matter how long our time on Earth. To say that Sean was special is to grossly understate. He was superbly gifted, sensitve, and incredible in the nicest ways. He brought genuine feelings to us through the music he made and delivered in his inimitable way.

My deepest condolences to Sean's family. He was so loved by so many here in Atlanta, and I feel so fortunate to have seen him and heard him play several times. I'll never forget the first time I saw him, and was so amazed to hear such a deep, soulful blues sound coming from a young white man. There was nothing like the joy of seeing him live, and he really got the crowd on its feet and dancing. How can you listen to a song like "No Half Steppin" and NOT want to get up and move? Few performers today play with Sean's passion. Never one to disappoint a crowd, even when I saw him on a night that he'd lost his voice, his guitar spoke for him, and an amazing array of musician friends came up and filled in on the vocals. The last time I saw him, playing as part of something called the Magic Bus (if I remember correctly), I had the chance to speak to him and tell him how much I loved his music. I have one of his CDs in my car, and have played it for my high school students in the classroom. Even my students loved him. I just heard of Sean's passing tonight, after getting an e-mail announcement from Northside which mentioned the Sean Costello foundation, and looking it up online to find out more. Needless to say I was shocked to learn of his passing. It brought tears to my eyes. My heart hurts at the news of the loss of such an amazing performer and son so early in his young life. I feel so lucky to have been able to see him play live so often and to have experienced his music. God bless his family, friends, and fans. Sean was a bright light to all that saw and heard him. My heart and prayers go out to all of you feeling this loss.

AND KNOW MATTER HOW MUCH HEALING, YEAR AFTER YEAR THEIR WILL ALYAYS, BE A PAIN IN MY HEART, EVEN WHEN REMEMBERING GOOD AND FUNNY THINGS ABOUT MY SON, AND IT WILL PROBABLY BE THE SAME FOR YOU ALSO, CAUSE YOU SEE GOD NEVER MEANT FOR MAN TO DIE, THEREFORE HE NEVER PUT WHAT EVER IT IS WE NEEDED TO DEAL WITH MOURNING , SO KNOW THIS YOUR DOING GREAT, KEEP ON GETTING UP IN THE MORNING, DRINK YOUR COFFEE, DO THE DISHES, GO OUT SIDE AND TEND TO YOUR FLOWERS. PUSH YOUR SELF TO DO SOME OF THE THINGS YOU LIKE. I HOPE I HAVEN'T STEPPED OUT OF LINE IF SO PLEASE FORGIVE ME.MY HEART AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO YOU. I had the honor of meeting and singing with Sean in a club in Roanoke, Virginia. As a singer, I have NEVER been so impressed by anyone's talent. Two years later, he returned to the same club, and was so kind to remember me and ask me to sing with him again. I want you to know, that was of the of the proudest nights of my life, that a fellow so talented would remember me, and ask me to hop on stage with him. I have bragged on your son's talent since my first meeting him. I recently moved to Warner Robins. I took my fiance to Atlanta to see a Black Crowe's concert and ran into Sean at "The Jumkman's Daughter". I recognized his voice from a distance before I ever saw his face. He was so gracious! You never forget a voice like that. Though I could never imagine your pain, I want you to know what an affect your son's incomparable talent has had on my life, and what a gift you gave to the world. Having grown up in Memphis, I have a deeply ingrained love for the Blues. My husband and I do not live in Memphis, but about 12 years ago we had gone back to Beale Street to celebrate my birthday. We were walking down the street trying to decide where to go, when a door opened. Out came the most wonderful sounds. Pure Blues like I had not heard in some time. We looked at each other and headed towards the Daisy (don't remember now if it was the New or the Old). Imagine our surprise when we walked in and saw this young kid sitting on the edge of the stage playing his heart out. I think my jaw hit the floor. We were transfixed and spent the evening loving every moment of the performance. After the show, my husband walked up front to speak to Sean, who was all of 16 or 17. Sean introduced his mother , who was travelling with him and we found out he lived about 2 hours away from us in Atlanta. After we returned to Chattanooga where we were living, every few weeks or so, we would load up our Explorer on Monday nights with as many people as we could fit into it and drive 2 hours to Fat Matt's to eat ribs and just listen to Sean and the guys play. We would try to catch shows that were anywhere close to us and always had the greatest time listening to him perform. After moving to Nashville 6 years ago, and with Sean's increased touring, we never again got the chance to see him play. I found out he had passed away when I was on MySpace looking up music and I went to his page. It absolutely breaks my heart that he is gone. It is rare that a musician has the talent to reach out and touch your soul like Sean was always able to do.I hurt so deeply for his mother and family. We have all lost a wonderful young man and an unbelievable musician. I hope he has at last found his peace. We will miss you Sean.

I live in Northern Ca. and seen Sean 4 times, Biscuits and blues in San Fran twice, Sweet water in Mill valley and the Torch club in Sacramento, I love the guy he always brought the house down, he always spent time talking with me and we talked about guitars and how he had to retire is early 50's goldtop and started using a re-issue, I have a short story when I saw Sean in Mill valley it was pretty dead maybe ten people, and around 10:30 he was thinking of wrapping it up and then came in 7 or 8 fine local women who wanted to party and Sean busted out his Mojo, he had those chicks out there grinding it went on for at least another hour, well I'm crying now it really hurts too, I love you Sean. Go hang with the big boys. forever a fan, thanks for signing my blues review. Mark Loustaunau Lousty@hotmail.com

I would like to thank all of you for your kind words about Sean. As someone said, he was one of a kind, the likes not to be seen again soon. For those fans from Atlanta and elsewhere you were smart enough to see it and insightful enough to love him. I miss him every minute of every day and still cannot listen to his music; however, I do get comfort from people who remember him as I do. Sean's Mom

Just one clarification: Sean was born April 16, 1979. One question: Sarah Kubley has informed us that someone named their child after Sean, would it be possible to know where they are from and how they know Sean? I am very touched by the tribute. They will never regret naming him after such a wonderful son as Sean was to us.

I know a couple that named their son Sean after your son. So sorry for your loss and am so grateful he shared himself and his music with us. So many talented people are not able to do that in any way.

I have seen Sean Costello perform on three different occasions. He was a great talent and will be missed. For someone that young and playing the" blues" was a good sign that the blues are alive a well. Never doubt the power of music.

I live in Minneapolis, and first saw Sean by chance at Blues on The Range in Chisolm, Minnesota, probably 2000. The tightest band I had seen in a long time. What was coming out of this kid was incredible. My wife and I were hooked. We saw him again up close at a bar later that night, and they were even better. We bought "Call the Cops", and "Cuttin In" and got into every song. I later ventured up to Superior, Wisconsin to see the band in the dead of winter. I took a friend, who hadn't seen Sean, and neither of us could believe this tremendous band was in a van, traveling to Superior, Wisconsin. There weren't many people at the place, but those of us who were there, were sharing something special. We talked to the guys between sets, and they were all great. I also took the family to Bayfront Bluesfest in Duluth, MN. Sean was not the marquee name at the fest, but many of us there thought he stole the show. I always checked out his website, and purchased "Moanin' for Molasses" and his self-titled albums, and loved them both. By this time I turned my teenage daughter onto Sean. He stopped coming to the land of 10,000 lakes, much to my dismay. In February, I picked up his last album with much anticipation, and was not dissapointed. I always thought he could blend the perfect amount of soul, funk, and blues, like no other. I could not believe it when I made my weekly check of his website, and found out about his passing. Too much talent gone too early. I didn't know Sean personally, like many of you. Those of you who did, I hope you realize how lucky you were to be around such a gifted kid. Sean, your music will live on up here in the Northland.

To Sean's family, friends and loves who had the pleasure of having this brilliant young man in their lives, I can only best express my sympathy and pay tribute by telling you that he deeply touches me and produces tears every time I play "Don't Pass Me By." I am sure every one who loved his music would admit the same. Rest assured that I will not pass you by Sean--I will turn to you often and let you make me smile and cry as I hear you sing and play for me. I will think of you at the Waukesha festival and will wish you were there. We can get together now with you Sean---any time we want.

They say that time heals...and I suppose it does (at least I hope it does). And I can certainly say that it's going to take LOTS of time to accept this. This loss is so huge and so painful and it affects so many, most importantly Sean's family. Blessings and love to his folks and I hope they know how many of us think of them and silently send strength. Thank you for Sean - he was truly one of a kind. We live in Atlanta and Sean was one of our own. After following him and his band for almost 15 years, my husband and I feel we've lost a member of our family. We are so very proud of him and, though we're not necessarily blues fans, we will always be SEAN COSTELLO FANS. As almost every single person who knows me knows, I have been slightly obsessed with Sean. It's been so hard to understand why I felt this strong attachment to him - I've been a Sean Groupie (I'm 45 years old and this NEVER happens to me). I used to tell him he was so darn hot and that I wish I was 15 years younger (he humored me but probably thought I was bizarre). The MAIN THING I always loved about Sean was his gentle spirit and his humility. What a soft-spoken, understated way he had about him...I have so very many wonderful memories of him. Peace to the many people who care about Sean. "There'll Be No Half Steppin'", Sweet Sean. I hope you enjoy the Sean Costello Flower Garden in my yard...and I hope you're resting in peace right now. It's going to take some time to accept for sure but know that we will never, never forget you.

Deepest sympathies to Sean's Mother , family and friends. I first heard of Sean when my cousin called me up about 4yearsago and told me I just had to see him at the Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse NY. I had never heard of him. When I arrived I looked around the room and it seemed every player in town who was'nt gigging themselves that night was there. The atmosphere was electric with anticipation. From the first note he played I knew I was about to hear something truly remarkable. Sean did not disappoint. He played licks that left my jaw dropping all night. Everytime he pulled a new trick out of his bag my cousin and I would look at each other and just shake our heads, smiling all night long. Never heard anyone like him before or since. Yeah, I had to buy a copy of each of the CDs he was hawking after the show. They still get constant rotation on my player. He just kept getting better and his latest is an extraordinary piece of work. I can't help but choke up hearing his singing and playing on " Going Home". Just my opinion, but I think this new CD is the best thing anyone has put out in many years. The third , and sadly last, time I saw Sean was at the Dinosaur once again. I had gone early to get some dinner before the show. In walks Sean , hours before showtime, just another guy. No pretense, no star treatment expected. I was apparently the only one who recognized him so I introduced myself and told him how much I was looking forward to his show. He spent the next half hour or so talking with me about everything under the sun. Blues in general, the state of the music business, our favorite players, guitars, women , life in general. He was as easy to talk with as a friend you've know for years. It's a half hour of my life I will always treasure. Of course he put on another blistering show that night. I wondered after Stevie passed so many years ago, if I'd ever hear anyone who touched me as much with his playing. Sean did. He was one of the best. I'd be excited for weeks just hearing he was coming to town again and was anxiously awaiting his next appearance. He will be missed. Peace be with you Sean. And thanks for the memories.

My husband brought a paper to the car today that had Sean on the front cover; and I was so excited and delighted to see his face and how he was doing..until I noticed the dates right below on the right. I couldn't believe it!! What an amazingly special person he was, and so young. I first met Sean at Fat Matt's Rib shack when I actually traveled 80% of the time for work but lived in Atlanta. When I walked into Fat Matt's for ribs that night, and I saw Sean and the band arrive; I honestly thought..O they have a few Georgia Tech students trying out their wings on us tonight. Well, I have to say...he got my full attention. I was not even sure if I was hearing what I heard coming out of his body and from his fingers; but I knew I was seeing something and someone very unique and to be treasured. Needless to say I did not eat my food much that night; because I was impressed with everyone in that band and the fact they looked like my kid sisters friends jamming old peoples session with their spin on it that worked for all ages. What a treat to see an old soul in such a youthful body. I became a groupie if you can call it that; I had to have my Monday and Wed fix and would scoot off to the Rib Shack often without my boyfriend who loved the Ribs but hated the thought of sitting too close with the seating arrangements with strangers. No he's not the one I married ..LOLL The man that won me over, that I am married to now, I actually had the pleasure of having introduced Sean to my then new boyfriend. We bought 2 CD's and had him sign them and was excited because he was beginning to take a long tour..and that was the last time we saw him. I discovered he still lived in town and would play at another location off 75; but our hectic work schedules and frequent absence of never being in the state; my heart breaks..because for anyone who ever met Sean knows he was such a Bright Star and his voice and guitar playing would mesmerize everyone who was in listening distance and even afterwards. You will not be forgotten and you were much and deeply loved.

Unfortunantly I never got to see Sean live. My mother came back from Key West in Feburary and brought his CD back, and it hasn't left my CD player since. Sean was absolutly amazing. The pureness of the blues he created is only comparable to the greats (Clapton, B.B., Buddy Guy, etc.). Sean lives on, very much so, through his music and in the hearts of his fans, and the artists who knew him. By the way I heard a wonderful tribute to Sean on a blues show hosted by Dan Ackroyd (Elwood Blues) on 92.3 WTTS (www.wttsfm.com) here in indianapolis. I believe you can find it on the website! I'm so glad I found this website and was able to express how large of an influence Sean is in my life. Thank you!

Sean Costello will always belong to Atlanta, and those of us who know him or were touched by him will know what a special gift he was to all of us. He was smart, kind, passionate, talented and compassionate. From all the places he performed, and all the souls he spoke to, he was as homebody as Atlanta is our home. To his family, we grieve your loss but we also rejoiced in your joys and the unforgetable memories of this young talented man who touched so many people and brought happiness to so many hearts. Sean, you have touched us all, thank you for sharing your gifts, your music and your human spirit with us and for bringing Atlanta into closer community. You have made God and Atlanta your home for always. You never forget a wonderful person.

Hello, I met Sean twice in at Warmdaddy's in Philly (our home town!). Besides an putting on an incredible performace, Sean was very friendly and cool. Both times we shared drinks at the bar and talked about growing up in Philly, traveling, and of course, music. I've introduced many people to Sean's music, and am deeply saddened by his passing. Being the same age as Sean, I told him how he was living my dream, and he calmy smiled and said "thanks, it's an honor." It's such a shame when we lose a friend in life, but the memories and joys that the person leaves with us echo forever. Thank you Sean for sharing your talent while you were here with us, it was my honor to have met you and been a part of your life for those fleeting moments. Heaven just welcomed a new lead guitarist... -Michael Starkey

I first saw Sean in 2000 at Buddy Guy's Legends in Chicago. He was amazing! Spoke to him after the show and he couldn't have been nicer. Very humble and a true gentleman. His sound on Susan Tedeschi's Just Won't Burn was impressive as well. Saw Sean again in 2007 at a really small blues club in Boca Raton FL an he blew the roof off the place. His guitar and voice were just truly incredible. Spoke to him again after that show and he was just as nice and humble as he was in 2000. You could see and hear the pure enjoyment in his playing. Yes, there's the Langs and Mayers and Shepards of Seans generation, but he really was the REAL DEAL...a great musician who will be greatly missed...RIP Sean

It was a couple of weeks ago and I was seeking some guitar lessons from a younger bluesman namely Sean, I don't know why. I thought he was from Massachusetts, anyway, when I heard that he wrestled with being Bipolor and that he had passed I imediatley felt my chest and heart rise up and the tears rolled down. I'm 52 and Bipolar. I know Sean is with the Lord . I will continue to seek His Spirit in my Playing . Peace and Love to ALL.

First got to hear Sean's music about five years ago and was hooked in an instant. Sean's songwriting and playing just got better and better with each album - not that the early albums weren't awesome in their own right. I live in the UK and never got to see Sean as I couldnt make the shows in France but I'm sure seeing the great man must have been something very special. The mantle of the "next big thing in the blues" was often banded around and overused but in Sean we had a player where "less definitely meant more". No big long flashy solos just impeccably played guitar - in 45 years of listening to the blues I really feel that Sean had no peers in the current generation of bluesman and his body of work should form a reference for any young player trying to find their way into the Blues scene. I still can't believe it's happened and my heartfelt wishes go out to his family - you can be very, very proud of all the pleasure your son has given to others. The last words are to you Sean, I hope you've found your peace.

Words really cannot express the sadness I feel. I just can't get over the fact that he's gone. I'm thinking about him tonight and all the memories I have of him and I'm just so sad. He was not just an incredible musician, but he was a wonderful person. I'll never forget the few times I was able to hang out at his house or the time he and his band stayed with at my then-boyfriend's parent's house in New Orleans while we were visiting. I truly treasure every moment that I got to spend with Sean. This is by far the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with in my life. I loved him so much and wish I got to know him even better. He had so much more music to give us, but he gets to sing with the angels now. I cherish every recorded melody now more than ever.

So terribly sad. You made the blues live through your fabulous voice and great playing. We saw you every time we could at Northside and we felt so proud to see you in Savannah in March where you outplayed everyone. You were always approachable and I was so happy that our daughter became a fan. She insisted upon hitting Northside at midnight on her 21st birthday and you had her dancing up a storm. You are sorely missed. A very great loss to the world of blues and Atlanta - we were privileged to have you. Our very sorrow and compassion go out to your family.
